CNN reports, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Caribbean Division along with the Justice Department, 158 arrests were made in conjuction with the largest drug and illegal weapons bust in Puerto Rican history. 500 agents and local officals worked to secure the apprehension of drug ring leaders, runners, suppliers and sellers. According to CNN.com, California authorities siezed $45 million dollars worth of illegal drugs found in a tractor trailer. The San Bernardino sheriffs office reports that during the investigation of the traffic violation, they noticed a “overwhelming odor” coming from the pallets in the back of the truck. Upon futher investigation the sheriffs officials discovered ”about 20 tons of narcotics stashed in pallets in the back of the truck, including about 38,000 pounds of marijuana, 2,700 pounds of cocaine and 67 pounds of methamphetamine, the sheriff’s office said in a statement,” which resulted in was one of the largest narcotics bust in the counties history.

Sonny Perdue, Governor of Georgia, signed into law banning the marijuana substitute K2. This new law bans the use and distribution of synthethic marijuana, in the state of Georgia. The law, H.B. 1309, places K2 on the schedule I controlled substance list along with Heroin and above Coaine, Ritalin and Opium which are schedule II substances. Created in the 1990s by a Clemson University organic chemist John W. Huffman, K2 mimicked the effects of cannabis on the brain.

“Side effects of the drug include rapid heart rate, very high blood pressure, hallucinations, seizures, vomiting and paranoia. K2 attacks cardiovascular and central nervous systems. It is used mostly by young people who are hoping for a marijuana-like high.”
Governor Perdue states that adding it to the schedule I list will help protect the health and safety of all Georgian’s. Atlanta reported that at least 12 cases of K2 hospitalizations for poisioning with serious health problems from the marijuana substitute. So what is huffing? Huffing is "the inhalation of chemical vapors to achieve an altered mental or physical state, which for most abusers is a euphoric effect" (National Drug Intelligence Center, 2001). These inhalants can be found in over 1,000 common household products. Here are some categories that should be closely guarded by parents and guardians of adolescents: volatile solvents, aerosols, gases and nitrates. The common household products for these categories are;

Volatile Solvents:

paint thinner, nail polish, nail polish remover, correction fluid, felt-tip makers and gasoline.

Aerosols:

spray paint, hair products, cooking spray.

Gases:

air conditioning units, propane tanks, butane lighters, whipped cream dispensers, and whippets (usually done at rave parties) .

Nitrites:(enhances sexual experiences)

commonly known as poppers, "small, mesh-covered, sealed capsules that are popped or snapped in order to release the vapors", can be purchased from adult bookstores and over the internet.

Paint or other stains on face, hands, or clothing

The Tennessee Drug Enforcement Administration published startling numbers in 2008 regarding drugs use as related to criminal behavior. The report shows, that since 2003 over 4,112 meth labs have been seized with predominate seizures in Eastern Tennessee. The Chattanooga metropolitian area seems to be a major hub for methamphetamine distribution, as well as, a corridor for cocaine trafficking. With this insurgence of drug distribution, the crime rate also increases. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations report in 2008, drug arrests make up over 11% of crime in the state (under the category of drug violations), this does not represent the percentage of crimes related to drug addiction; robbery, forgery, prostitution, DUI’s, etc. I just heard of an incident in Chattanooga where a young man robbed a drug store, jumping over the pharmacy counter, demanding all of the Oxycontin in the store so that he could feed his own habit and re-sell the drug on the street. Why is it that drugs and alcohol are so powerful making people resort to such extreme action of criminal behavior in order to get high? Drugs and alcohol affect the brain in that it deceives the user into believing that they are not able to function without the drug and the user must do whatever it takes in order to maintain their level of drug/alcohol intake. In many cases involving drugs and crime, the user has absorbed all of their resources into drugs that they must now turn to more severe criminal behavior in order to maintain their level of addiction. There are risks everytime someone wants to use drugs; continually looking over ones shoulder because of the implications of drug and alcohol addiction. Most addicts struggle with the queston of “why do I need to go to treatment for my addiction? “I can do this on my own.” In some cases this is true however, the majority of the time treatment is the only way for someone suffering from addiction to finally get relief from the pain addiction causes; lack of control, disengagement from yourself, your family and friends, respect, trust, etc. In my own journey, the fight to choose treatment almost cost me my life.
