K2, also know as Spice, is spreading like wildfire throughout the United States and sending many of its users to hospital emergency rooms. Recently, CBS news reported that 6 states have put into law the illegal distribution and use of K2-synthetic marijuana; Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana and Missouri. Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and New York are now considering bans.

K2 is very easy to get. One can order K2 off the internet and through magazines. K2 seems harmful enough because it is marketed as incense or bath salts and packaged in brightly colored bags. But those who are using the synthetic drug are playing russian roulette with their lives. Dr. Gaylor Lopez is the director of the Georgia Poison Control Center in Atlanta, states, “we started seeing a mushrooming of calls”, only 12 calls came into the Poison Control Center in 2009, the center has already received over 500 calls nationwide, which is “incredibly dangerous” Lopez says.

K2 is 15 times more potent that marijuana and can have disturbing side effects like seizures and tremor activity. One user states that he had used the drug more than 50 times until he wound up in the hospital and then found himself going to addiction treatment in New York. Everytime one uses K2 they are gambling with their lives. The Drug Enforcement Administration in Washington, D.C., is looking into whether they should put K2-spice should be a controlled substance and make illegal in all 50 states.
