Drug Addiction A Global Epidemic

Drug addiction in Afghanistan is twice the global average according to a recent press release by AFP.com international news agency. The report states that eight percent of Afghans are addicted to opium the country’s main export. Afghanistan is the world’s number one narcotic producer which is one reason over one million people between the ages of 15-64 are addiced to opium or heroin.

Opium, the raw material for making heroin is easily accessible in Afghanistan since the opium crop is the main source of income for most Afghans, therefore causing some of the increase in addiction. Afghans are also being treated for addictions to marijuana, painkillers and tranquillsers as a “kind of self medication due to the hardships of life in this war torn country”. Drug addiction treatment centers in Afghanistan are not able to handle the influx of drug addicts and can only treat about 10,000 patients.
