All butterflies go through a complete metamorphosis encompassing 4 stages of their development into adulthood. The first stage is the egg; a butterfly starts life as a very small, round, oval or cylindrical egg. The second stage the larvae; butterfly larvae are actually what we call caterpillars. The third stage; Pupa (Chrysalis), which is the coolest stage in the development of a butterfly, inside of the pupa, the caterpillar is rapidly changing. The fourth stage; the adult butterfly is when the caterpillar has done all of its forming and changing inside the pupa, if you are lucky, you will get to see an adult butterfly emerge.
The metamorphsis of a butterfly is exactly what happens when someone addicted to drugs or alcohol enters addiction treatment. Because of the damage of drugs and alcohol, a person is thrust back into an egg-like stage, having to be reborn. Drugs and alcohol make a person so introverted that it is as if they are in this egg-like stage of metamorphosis, a cocoon where nothing in life is seen, noticed or recogonized. Those who are suffering from substance abuse and are ready for recovery begin their journey breaking free from the shell of addiction and learn the process of walking in reality, free from drugs. Like the third stage of a butterflies development, the addict while in addiction treatment begins to discover a new way of life, developing and changing old habits and creating new awareness of life without drugs or alcohol. The beauty of recovery is with hard work and perserverance, one can fully develop into a working, functional adult in society. Spread your wings and learn to fly. Allow beauty to flourish in the light of drug rehabilitation.
