Looking Up From the Bottom

Hitting rock bottom. It is said that one will not get help until they have reached the bottom. "The bottom" is different for all people, yet it is very much the same; the sufferer has to reach the bottom in order to climb to the top. So, what does it mean to hit bottom? This is a moment of realization that the substance abuse has taken an embarassing turn for the worst. This is the point when one has to make a life changing decision, continue the substance abuse or confront it and reach out for help through addiction treatment.

For so many who are trapped in addiction one feels like there is no hope for change or can even find the strength and courage to reach out for help. Looking up from the bottom a choice has to be made are you going to live or die because with the addict these are the only choices. The bottom is the point in which denial has to be overcome. Denial or refusal to seek addiction treatment will be disasterous for the addict and for their loved one. The cycle of addiction must stop and help must be sought. For the sufferer, the bottom has to be of such magnitude that it will act as a real wake up call.

"But there's good news, too. Often, an alcoholic in recovery is able to look back on their ‘rock bottom' moment and recognise it as the point at which their life began to move in a positive direction."
